Mosquito Control
Though there are many different types of pests, mosquitoes are among the most prevalent and annoying. These pests feed on the blood of humans and other organisms and often transmit disease. The only way to be rid of them is to employ some type of mosquito control. A variety of mosquito control methods exist, but not all of them are effective.
There are many different mosquito control products on the market that employ different strategies to kill the mosquito. Indeed, groups like the American Mosquito Control Association specialize in providing information and strategies to suppress mosquito populations and help people do what they really want to do: kill the damn mosquito.
Almost any mosquito control product on the market contains the following ingredients: DEET, catnip oil extract, eucalyptus oil extract, and a variety of other repellents. Other than synthetic repellents, many people choose to employ natural mosquito control. This includes eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and introducing natural mosquito predators.
One of the largest problems faced as a result of mosquitoes is the spread of disease. In most temperate regions, mosquitoes are not a serious health threat; however, in Africa, Central America, and other parts of the world, mosquitoes transmit Malaria, which is the leading cause of premature death worldwide.
The tremendous problems mosquitoes present are cause for forceful preventative measures. In many third world countries, people use mosquito nets in every day life. Nets are placed around beds, windows, and any other area through which a mosquito could possibly enter. Furthermore, these mosquito nets are treated with insecticides to ensure a mosquito does not squeeze through.
A variety of other mosquito control methods exist as well. Wearing light colored clothing and a hat significantly enhances DEET and other spray on repellents. The feed through mosquito control that results from using mosquito repellent candles is also particularly effective.
Many generally accepted methods of mosquito control are in fact not conducive to repelling them. Bats are generally thought of as prime mosquito predators. In reality, mosquitoes comprise less than 1% of a bat’s diet. Furthermore, bug zappers are often used as repellents, but it is unclear if they actually accomplish that goal.
Mosquito control is a difficult task that requires a variety of tactics to achieve. Trying different methods of mosquito control, reading information from organizations like the American Mosquito Control Association, and being open to different tactics will yield results that can significantly reduce the impact these pests have on every day life.
