Mosquito Dunks

Having a mosquito breeding problem? You may need to try using mosquito dunks. A mosquito dunk is a larvicide that will target the spawn of mosquitoes. The primary ingredient in mosquito dunks is BTI, or bacillus thuringiensis israelensis. Since mosquitoes breed in still waters and seasonally wet areas, it is important to make sure that you are treating an area that actually has mosquito larvae. Wondering how to use a mosquito dunk? Well, it is fairly simple.

Once you have determined that there are larvae present in the water, measure the area to be treated. If the area is up to 10’ x 10’ one complete mosquito dunk can be used, like in a swimming pool for example. For smaller areas, like bird baths, the mosquito dunk can be broken up into smaller pieces. This product is a floating sustained release larvicide that will fight mosquito larvae for up to 30 days after one application.
You can also pre-treat an area that may flood and has been a place for mosquito breeding. When the area fills with water, for example when it rains and it fills the gutter, the mosquito dunk will float to the surface and begin to release larvicides. This is a costly treatment, so it is a good idea to be certain that larvae are present before treating the area. Swamp areas and moving waters are unlikely places for mosquitoes to place their larvae.
A similar larvicide is siphotrol mosquito larvicide granules. Areas as large as 6,525 feet can be treated with a 12 oz container. Protection lasts up to 21 days with siphotrol mosquito larvicide granules. Like the mosquito dunk, it can be used in smaller areas of still water like bird baths, gutters, fountains and water gardens. Smaller areas will obviously need a lower quantity of the larvicide. The primary ingredient in siphotrol mosquito larvicide granules is S-Methoprene, which targets mosquitoes before they completely develop.

Both types of larvicide will provide the continued elimination of mosquito spawn for weeks. Each product is safe to use near plants, animals and vegetation.

If you would like to reduce the mosquito population on your property, these products would both be an excellent choice for you. Pesticide licensing is not required for use. It is not permitted by law for you to use these products on property other than your own without the owner’s permission. Remember to use as directed and keep out of the reach of children.
